CRIME NEWS

  • Roy Powell, 72, pastor of Cedar Street Missionary Baptist Church in Saraland, allegedly pistol-whipped a man on Mobile Street during a robbery, then returned to apologize & was arrested on Wednesday and released on a $40,000 bond.  AL.com
  • On Thursday, FBI Mobile and local agencies — including Elberta PD, BCSO, and MCSO — detained 18 people in Baldwin County during an immigration operation.  UTV 44
  • Mobile Police Department officers held a traffic operation from May 24 to May 25 to ensure vehicles were properly insured, registered, and that drivers were not drinking and driving—resulting in 36 citations and 16 warnings—with most citations issued for speeding.  WKRG News 5

ECONOMY NEWS

  • NOAA is proposing an emergency action to raise red grouper catch limits from 4.96 million to 8.28 million pounds — the move will extend the recreational season to ease economic hardships. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management will accept public comments on the proposal until June 12.  UTV 44

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mobile Port dredging is raising concerns among environmentalists, residents, and business owners because the project will add 90 million cubic yards of spoil to Mobile Bay over the next 20 years — critics say the federal government is not following its own water quality rules. The Alabama Port Authority and the Army Corps of Engineers continue to work on ways to protect the bay as they deepen and widen the channel.  1819 News
  • Hurricane hunters are preparing for an above average season as they ready their aircraft and crews for short-notice flights — they plan to drop 15 to 30 dropsondes per mission to share real-time storm data once hurricane season starts on June 1.  NBC 15

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorneys with the Alabama ABC Board, ALEA, and the Petroleum — Convenience Marketers of Alabama signed an agreement in federal court on Thursday that loosens restrictions on vape products in convenience stores under a new law set to limit sales tomorrow. Under the agreement, P&CMA will withdraw its motion for a temporary restraining order — and the stipulation remains in effect until the case is resolved.  1819 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Thomas Hospital launched its annual Junior Volunteer program on May 30 by accepting 50 high school students from Baldwin and Mobile counties to serve in various hospital departments and learn about health careers. The program runs from June 2 through July 25 and requires students to maintain a B average (selected from 12 area schools).  Gulf Coast Media

  • Late softball coach Tabitha Baggett was celebrated for her keen strategy and tough love (her favorite No. 5 jersey is still honored by her son) that built a winning team, and coach Chan Lowe led the team to the state tournament while holding onto her coaching texts for guidance.
