CULTURE NEWS

  • Mobile native Curry Barker’s film Obsession earned $30.4 million at 2,655 theaters this Memorial Day weekend, boosting its domestic total to $60.7 million and marking a 76.49 percent gain since its May 15 debut.   • Call News won 12 awards at the Alabama Press Association’s Better Newspapers competition, including five firsts in Division C for photography, design, sports coverage and commentary.   • Mobile Area Water & Sewer System reported heavy rains caused an estimated 1,800 gallons of wastewater to overflow into Pierce Creek (9220 Airport Blvd) today.  NBC 15

SPORTS NEWS

  • Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer said he can support 12, 16, or 24 teams as debates continue over the College Football Playoff format for 2026. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey noted that no decisions on expansion are expected this week & discussions remain among conferences.  AL.com
  • SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said at a spring meeting in Destin Tuesday that conference games will shift to the second-to-last weekend starting with the 2027 season (this change ends Cupcake Weekend) while 2026 schedules remain unchanged for teams like Alabama and Auburn.  AL.com
