  • Thousands of red poppies cover USS Alabama ahead of Memorial Day in a display by the Alabama Poppy Project. The display remains at Battleship Memorial Park and includes (Monday's remembrance ceremony for a 9/11 memorial steel beam exhibit) honoring fallen service members.  NBC 15

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Baldwin Pops will honor fallen service members with two Memorial Day concerts on Monday, May 25 at Henry George Park in Fairhope and Sunday, May 31 at Foley Heritage Park—featuring a new commissioned work and a family-friendly patriotic program. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Boaters are urged to slow down in no wake and no motor zones around the restored Perdido Islands this summer in Orange Beach; the campaign aims to protect seagrass beds & nesting birds by raising awareness of the existing restrictions.  Gulf Coast Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Baldwin communities are pushing for zoning to control a planned 4,500-acre solar project and a possible future data center, with Stockton residents voting on it next month and Rabun residents starting a petition drive. Community meetings (town halls) have been held in Stockton, Rabun, Tensaw, and Lottie to boost local input.  NBC 15

  • On Tuesday, May 19, the Orange Beach Makos won their sixth consecutive Class 4A state softball title with a 6-0 victory over Plainview, setting an AHSAA record — a celebration followed on Wednesday, May 20 at the Orange Beach Performing Arts Center.  Gulf Coast Media
