COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local non-profit is offering free summer classes to help parents improve banking skills, parenting, and safety with options available in-person and online. The program began with a Monday better banking session and will include a financial literacy session on May 31 along with Zoom classes for parents of young children and teens — community case manager Brian Hewes said the courses are designed to give parents the tools they need.  WKRG News 5

CRIME NEWS

  • Mike Thomas, 28, from Stockbridge, Ga., was captured Monday morning on I-65 in south Alabama—officers used spike strips to disable his vehicle after an overnight manhunt and his attempt to carjack another car before he fled on foot.  AL.com
  • At a Citronelle High School graduation party on May 11 on Tom Hopkins Road, a group left the party and got into an argument in a cul-de-sac that led to a shooting where 19-year-old Jaylon Rivers died and 18-year-old Zachary Morgan was hurt—Mobile County Sheriff’s officers arrested a juvenile suspect who now faces felony murder and robbery charges.  AL.com
  • Police responded on May 15 at 8:52 p.m. after Matthew Delaney was shot while sitting on his porch talking on his phone in Mobile—his family called his survival a miracle because the bullet missed major arteries—while investigators continue working the case.  1819 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mobile marked its history by breaking ground on a $5.1 million Africatown Welcome Center (across from Old Plateau Cemetery in Africatown) on May 19 and plans to open it in May, 2026. The city also unveiled bronze statues of Hall of Fame athletes (recognizing its legacy amid federal cuts to Black historical programs) to affirm its rich past.  AL.com

  • Mobile Bay fisherman Charlie Gray, a Dauphin Island native with over 45 years of experience, has been appointed by Governor Kay Ivey to the Alabama Conservation Advisory Board to replace Gary Wolfe who resigned in April & to advise on local conservation efforts in Montgomery.  1819 News
  • Mobile’s Langan Park will start a $15.2 million lake dredging project in August — funded mainly by BP oil spill settlement money, the 18‑month work will standardize the lake depths to boost kayaking, canoeing and ecological health.  AL.com
  • Alabama’s 2026 election season begins as candidates for state offices will start raising funds on Monday for the May 19, 2026 primary—this race includes governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and all 140 legislative seats. Sen. Tuberville and other political leaders are weighing their options, and their decisions may change who runs and how the contests will unfold.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Alabama has launched a free mental well-being platform called CredibleMind through a partnership among the Alabama Department of Public Health + Alabama Department of Mental Health + Jefferson County Department of Health + Mobile County Health Department to help residents quickly access confidential, personalized self-care resources and reduce the mental health care gap worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. The platform offers immediate access to evidence-based tools for managing stress, anxiety, and sleep issues.  NBC 15
