  • The Gulf Coast is launching summer with events—from a Ladies Night block party in downtown Foley on May 21 to a mural unveiling in Mobile on May 23—with a national tribute at USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park on May 25.   • NAACP is urging Black athletes and fans to boycott public university athletic programs in southern states including Alabama amid restrictions on Black voting rights. CULTURE NEWS

  • Historic Blakeley State Park will host a two-part program on Saturday, May 23 that highlights William Bartram’s 1775 journey through the region, beginning with a two-hour cruise from the Blakeley dock at 9 a.m. and continuing with a free presentation at 11:15 a.m. led by a local expert.  Gulf Coast Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Spanish Fort teacher Elizabeth Von Hofe was honored today as Alabama Teacher of the Year at Spanish Fort Elementary School and received a vehicle from Alfa Insurance. She will spend the next year traveling to speak with educators (leading workshops statewide) and sharing best practices with local schools.  NBC 15

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A federal appeals court recently ruled that Mobile Baykeeper has standing to sue Alabama Power over its coal ash closure plan at Plant Barry (Mobile County). Mobile Baykeeper seeks a binding commitment for complete coal ash removal while Alabama Power works with the EPA to address potential regulatory violations.  1819 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Daphne honored veteran Dr. Barry Booth with a proclamation and key to the city on May 18 at City Hall, recognizing his decades-long work with Honor Flight South (which supported over 950 WWII veterans).  AL.com
  • Daphne City Council approved a $900,000 contract to design a $26 million project that will convert the Infirmary Health’s Thomas Medical Center at Magnolia Place into an indoor recreation and senior center, funded by $8 million GOMESA money + bonds; construction is set for late 2027 with opening in 2029.  AL.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Orange Beach won its sixth straight Class 4A softball title with a 6 to 0 victory over Plainview at Oxford Choccolocco Park on Tuesday, May 19, extending its unbeaten record to 24 wins and no losses (breaking the AHSAA record).  AL.com
  • On Tuesday at Oxford’s Choccolocco Park, Saraland’s Spartans won their first state softball championship when pitcher Myleigh Dobbins threw 6.2 innings of shutout softball for a 5-0 win over Helena. The victory followed an extra-innings win that pushed the team into the title game.  AL.com
