- ➤ Fairhope high school senior Sydney Gray won the national Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge and became the only two-time winner. She will work with her mentor virtually and travel to New York in June—her song Fall is set to be performed on Broadway on June 16. 1819 News
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Gulf Shores International Airport is set to begin its first commercial flights on May 21 when Allegiant Air brings an inaugural flight from Knoxville at 1:14 p.m. and schedules a return departure at 5:15 p.m., a move expected to offer residents and visitors more travel choices while easing road congestion—marking a big change for an airport that served private flights for 42 years. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Alabama high school seniors graduating in 2026 will need to earn 24 credits and meet an extra college and career readiness indicator (like a required ACT score, a passing AP score, or another approved measure) to receive their diplomas. Students on alternate achievement pathways will not have to follow the new rule. AL.com
- ➤ Amy Minton, a member of the Alabama Public Library Service board and the Etowah County Library board, urged families to visit local libraries as summer reading programs start soon+ many libraries will offer events and classes to improve reading skills. - ➤ The U.S. Census Bureau released its 2024 population estimates for 463 Alabama cities and towns, showing that Mobile and other large cities lost residents while Huntsville gained over 4,000 people—Brookside grew by 13.2%.
