CRIME NEWS

  • Officers responded on May 13th to The Williams Motel after a report that Mobile man Jarrett Packer (52) physically assaulted a woman by forcing her to stay in her room when she tried to leave and demanded money from her, leaving her with minor injuries, and he was charged with domestic violence and unlawful imprisonment (investigation ongoing).  WKRG News 5
  • On May 6, an Alabama mother from Citronelle allegedly drove her car off U.S. Route 45 after showing signs of alcohol impairment, which resulted in the death of her 5-year-old child and left her other two children injured—she has been charged with manslaughter and faces restrictions if released.  AL.com
  • Mobile Police Department officers arrested 28-year-old Jammie Lamont McCovery after he led them on a car chase on I-65 and then on foot following a crash near Dauphin Island Parkway—he is charged with first-degree marijuana possession, felony attempt to elude, and possession of a controlled substance.  WKRG News 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Afrikaner refugees from South Africa arrived in Alabama on May 12 and Inspiritus, a local nonprofit, said it will help them secure services+ while thousands of other refugees remain stranded due to a paused federal resettlement program.  AL.com
  • Alabama's 2017 Memorial Preservation Act stops local officials from removing Confederate monuments without special approval, so about 175 remain while only 18 have been removed or renamed since 2018—reports show that removals peaked in 2020.  AL.com
  • The Alabama Department of Human Resources rolled out new security features for EBT cards that let users disable card transactions and get alerts for account activity to protect SNAP benefits from fraud. Consumers can activate these tools through the ConnectEBT website (or app) while the department works with its vendor to add further security enhancements.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Baldwin County legislators did not pass HB486 before the session ended—this bill was needed to renew the special 2-mill tax that funds North Baldwin Infirmary due to a dispute over sales tax revenue. Lawmakers plan to revisit the measure next session while local officials warn that the rural hospital's funding may be at risk.  AL.com
