  • Atticus, a new elevated restaurant experience from Charles Mereday & Brittany Hadden, has opened at 61 N. Section St. in downtown Fairhope, taking over the former Plane & Coastal space that closed last September. The restaurant offers a four-course tasting menu with global influences.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Gather + Grind, formerly Summer Moon Coffee, rebranded on May 1 in Daphne. Marcus and Kelly Allgood now run the independent café with a refreshed space and a new menu that keeps money local.  Gulf Coast Media

CRIME NEWS

  • Yesterday, MAWSS announced that during a routine dam dive at the Converse Reservoir dam, divers located a grenade-style IED that was safely retrieved and detonated by the Gulf Coast Regional Maritime Response and Render-Safe Team with support from law enforcement agencies.  NBC 15

CULTURE NEWS

  • Historic Blakeley State Park — a Gulf Coast landmark — will host cruises, a foodways program, and a concert on May 16. Visitors ride two 90-minute cruises through the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, join a 9:30 a.m. demonstration of 1800s cooking practices, and enjoy musician Jesse Taylor Perry’s performance at 6:30 p.m.  Gulf Coast Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Elizabeth Eubanks Von Hofe, a Spanish Fort Elementary educator, was named Alabama Teacher of the Year at an event held this evening at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery (she will serve as the state’s ambassador for public education).  NBC 15
  • More than 30 Alabama high school students were named National Merit Scholars and each received a $2,500 scholarship based on academic record, PSAT scores, community service + recommendations. The awards support their ongoing education.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Orange Beach Planning Commission will review the Pirates Voyage dinner theater proposal on June 8 in a decisive meeting. City leaders and residents worry about location concerns and the possibility of a land purchase as the debate continues.  AL.com
  • City transit officials are hosting drop-in sessions at the West Regional Library on Thursday from 3:30 to 6:30 and at the Ben May Main Library on Friday from 11:30 to 2 to gather feedback on planned changes to the Wave Transit system, which will include microtransit starting in July + riders can share their thoughts.  NBC 15

  • South Alabama basketball coach Richie Riley is interviewing candidates for three assistant coach positions after three staff members left for new jobs, and the Jaguars signed five players from the transfer portal while expecting to add two or three more before June workouts.  AL.com
