  • Mobile Bay residents should get ready for hurricane season starting June 1 & through November by following NOAA guidelines on checking evacuation zones, building supply kits, and securing homes and finances.   • The Shrine of the Holy Cross at 612 Main St. in Daphne will host a Stella Maris celebration on May 23 at 5 p.m. to honor Merchant Mariners and seafarers with a Mass and a reception at Father Vincent Warren Parish Hall.  Gulf Coast Media

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cici's Pizza plans to open seven new restaurants in Alabama within the next year. The Texas-based franchise will expand into Cullman, Gadsden, Birmingham areas and Montgomery to serve families seeking buffet-style pizza (with customizable options) and community dining.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The EPA announced up to $50 million in grants for projects led by farmers in the Gulf of Mexico watershed. The program will award 20 to 30 grants ranging from $1.5 million to $2.5 million over five years and eligible organizations (including groups in Alabama) must submit applications by June 19.  Gulf Coast Media
  • The City of Mobile is constructing a $6.3M animal shelter along the I-65 service road to replace its outdated downtown facility. The project, awarded to Rogers & Williard, Inc. on April 28, will offer more space & better amenities for pets, staff and volunteers.  The Mobile Rundown

  • Construction on Mobile’s new downtown arena remains on track for a Mardi Gras opening despite heavy rains that caused minor delays. Contractors may add shifts (including nights) to recover lost time as Regions Bank secures a 12-year naming deal for the venue.  UTV 44

SPORTS NEWS

  • 68 Ventures Bowl will host a girls varsity flag football tournament for Mobile and Baldwin county teams in July at the Mobile County Sportsplex. The event will use a round-robin format with each team playing three games — winners will advance to a championship round during the December bowl.  AL.com
  • After retiring from BCBE schools this year, longtime Baldwin County coach Mike Ebert will join Snook Christian as associate athletic director for the 2026-27 school year, where he will coach baseball and help with the football program on Highway 59 (continuing his 30-year legacy in the community).  Gulf Coast Media
  • At Mobile’s Robert Trent Jones Magnolia Grove, Vestavia Hills clinched its second straight Class 7A boys state golf title with a 6-under 282 score on Tuesday while Alabama Christian senior Julie Waldo earned her third girls title with a 136 total at Dothan — additional class champions were crowned statewide.  AL.com
  • At Hoover High School on Tuesday, May 12, Spain Park sophomore JD Thompson won the AHSAA State Decathlon with 6,250 points while Auburn’s Katharine Lee claimed the Heptathlon title with 4,857 points (56 boys and 44 girls competed).  AL.com
  • Twenty teams in regional softball tournaments advanced to next week's state championship tournament. Teams qualified from events held at Coffee O’Neal Park in Florence, Sand Mountain Park in Albertville, Lagoon Park in Montgomery and at Gulf Shores Sportsplex, with state play set to begin Monday at Oxford’s Choccolocco Park.  AL.com
