CRIME NEWS

  • On May 11, Mobile County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting on Tom Hopkins Rd where an argument between Jaylon Rivers and another juvenile escalated, resulting in Rivers’ death and leaving the other minor critically injured—detectives are investigating the homicide.  NBC 15
  • Mobile police arrested a man for shooting at vehicles Monday morning — officials said the incident occurred near Dauphin Street and Monterey Street where at least one vehicle was hit by gunfire — as authorities continue to investigate.  WKRG News 5

CULTURE NEWS

  • On the weekend, a youth dance team performed a routine titled James Spann Dance in a viral video shared by ABC 33/40. The routine began with an introduction from the chief meteorologist and used Salt-N-Pepa's song featuring phrases like Whatta man and Respect the Polygon—Spann said he was very honored by the performance.  AL.com
  • Mobile’s Azalea Trail Maids have captured national attention on TikTok as videos show high school seniors in pastel bonnets, massive hoop skirts, and lace gloves parading at community events; every year, 50 students are chosen through a competitive process that tests their knowledge of local history and academics. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mud dumping from the Port of Mobile deepening project is hurting oysters and shrimp, and local fishermen say the extra mud is covering oyster reefs—fishermen plan to voice their concerns at a town hall at St. Phillip Neri Catholic Church on May 15—.  1819 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state’s Office of Information Technology reported a significant cybersecurity breach on Monday morning after detecting the issue Friday night. Some state employee usernames and passwords were compromised—teams are working with a leading cybersecurity firm to secure and restore services—while there is no evidence that personal information was retrieved.  AL.com
  • Two county judges ruled against United Methodist motions to dismiss lawsuits by breakaway churches in rural south Alabama – Elba Methodist in Coffee County and Crawford Methodist in Russell County may continue seeking clear title to their properties. Earlier decisions by three other judges also allowed similar lawsuits to move forward.  AL.com
