CRIME NEWS

  • Mobile police arrested 6 individuals in connection to the fatal shooting at Sage Park that claimed the life of 28-year-old Frenicka Craig and injured another—authorities expect additional arrests, including a juvenile subject who will be charged as an adult.  UTV 44
  • Governor Kay Ivey announced the nitrogen gas execution window for convicted murderer Gregory Hunt—convicted for the 1990 rape and murder of Karen Lane in Cordova—will run from midnight on Tuesday, June 10 until Wednesday, June 11, making him the second person to face this method this year.  1819 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Andrew Kiernan, a junior at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, earned a perfect 36 on the ACT and said he was excited about reaching his goal—he improved from earlier scores of 32 and 34 and credited his self-paced study course and family support for his success.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Alabama was recognized as a national leader in preschool quality in a report by the National Institute for Early Education Research, meeting all 10 benchmarks and serving 24,640 four-year-olds during the 2023–2024 school year. The report noted that Alabama spent $181.6 million on pre-K programs (up nearly $8.7 million from the previous year) while reaching 41% of its four-year-old population (one of only five states meeting these benchmarks) amid efforts to expand access.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Faculty and staff from Coastal Alabama Community College gathered on April 25 in Atmore to launch an Emergency Response Crisis Team that strengthened college-wide emergency preparedness. The all-day training provided hands-on instruction in CPR, trauma care and Stop the Bleed—each campus team left with Emergency Response Bags as more annual sessions are planned.  Gulf Coast Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In a closed-door meeting in Orange Beach, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Secretary Hal Taylor listened to local officials who said Marine Patrol troopers ticket boaters without warnings, and Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon and Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch said they plan to contact ALEA to review these concerns—officials remain unsure if changes will follow.  1819 News
  • The Alabama Department of Revenue warned residents on Monday about fake text messages that claim unpaid tolls+ these messages contain links that lead to websites designed to steal private data. The department said it does not send texts and urged people to delete any suspicious messages immediately.  Gulf Coast Media
