  • Foley will host two nationally recognized America in Bloom advisors on May 14-15 to evaluate its revitalization, beautification, and community improvement efforts (a program focused on civic pride and environmental stewardship). Their evaluations will guide local projects and future awards announced during the national symposium in Washington, D.C.  Gulf Coast Media

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alabama’s Jonathan Young from Gulf Shores won immunity on Survivor’s 11th episode by excelling in a challenge and steering a double elimination that left seven castaways. The show airs Wednesdays at 7 p.m. on CBS and the live finale will air May 20.  AL.com
  • The Descendants Forum, a virtual event launched by Kinfolkology and the Clotilda Descendants Association, brings together free and enslaved African American descendants along with community leaders and scholars to build a shared space for collaboration and advocacy.   • A community block party will unveil a tribute mural honoring Temptations bass singer Melvin Franklin later this month, with Mobile Arts Council and the Franklin family hosting the event on Saturday, May 23 at International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1410 (509 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue).  Gulf Coast Media

  • Buffalo Rock is investing $10 million in a new 25,000-sqft distribution facility on a 10-acre site in Loxley that will create 100 jobs—50 professional and 50 logistics with an average wage of $75,000—as part of a booming industrial corridor near I-10.  Gulf Coast Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Foley High School opened new athletic and fine arts facilities (including a girls' weight room) on Thursday, May 7 as part of an $11 million upgrade; the Baldwin County School System will spend a total of $58 million on sports and arts improvements across the district to support growing enrollment.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The NOAA Hurricane Awareness Tour stopped at Mobile International Airport on Tuesday during National Hurricane Preparedness Week, allowing officials and residents to see the aircraft and methods used for forecasting.   • Mizell Memorial Hospital in Opp filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy but will remain open as appointments and clinical services continue (the filing seeks to address rising costs and reimbursement shortfalls).  AL.com

  • Haley Hart, a Spanish Fort alum, was named 2026 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year after a breakout season with the Ragin' Cajuns, batting .369 & playing error-free as second base, becoming only the 11th in program history to earn the honor as Louisiana opens conference play at Lamson Park in Lafayette.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Baldwin County’s sports scene is buzzing as St. Michael’s Brent Acker sets track records—winning a 4A state title in the 400-meter and earning extra medals while boosting his soccer team, and Spanish Fort’s girls golf team clinches the Class 6A South Sub-State title led by Sara Carter Hare’s score of 68.  Gulf Coast Media
  • NFL teams selected 10 prospects from Alabama high schools in the 91st draft during April, ranking the state third per capita based on 2020 Census figures and tied sixth overall among states & including Mobile native Deontae Lawson among the draftees.  AL.com
