CRIME NEWS

  • A Mobile man, Derrick C. Busby—34 and a convicted felon—was sentenced to two years in prison after a traffic stop on Oct. 22 revealed a loaded, stolen Taurus 9 mm pistol and other contraband; Busby told officers it was his even though he had learned it might be linked to a homicide.  WKRG News 5
  • Jay-Z filed an amended lawsuit in Alabama that accuses lawyer Tony Buzbee — along with lawyer Antigone Curis and two others — of using Wikipedia edits and false rape claims to hurt his and Roc Nation’s reputation.  UTV 44
  • Three Mobile County men—James Eugene Dees, Zachary Ray Norris and Jason WC Jones—were arrested for charges related to child sexual abuse during a five-day FBI-led operation that has resulted in 205 arrests and the rescue of 115 children.  WKRG News 5
  • On May 6 at 2:30 p.m., police responded to a duplex shooting at 736 Reynolds Ave when neighbor Miya Houston shot a man—who was taken for emergency surgery—and then arrested her and charged her with Assault 1st Degree (she said past homicide suspicions inflamed the dispute).  UTV 44

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Kay Ivey signed legislation that will create a shark alert system to send cellphone warnings when a shark attack occurs along Alabama’s coast. The law is named after Mountain Brook teen Lulu Gribbin (Lulu Gribbin Shark Alert System Act), who lost part of her hand and leg in an attack last year and urged lawmakers to act.  Alabama Public Radio
  • Mobile’s seven mayoral candidates met Tuesday at Cottage Hill Baptist Church to outline plans for public safety and infrastructure ahead of the Aug. 26 election. They offered proposals—including adding more police officers and using new technology—to fight crime and build a safer city.  AL.com
  • On Tuesday, the Alabama Senate passed a one-cent grocery sales tax cut after a technical amendment and the House agreed on the amended House Bill 386— the measure now goes to Gov. Kay Ivey for review.  1819 News
  • On Tuesday, the Alabama Senate passed a bill that raises the minimum age to buy vaping products from 19 to 21 and requires sellers to pay a one-time application fee plus an annual permit fee while imposing tougher penalties for violations. The amended law (which lets grocery and gas stations continue sales) now goes to Gov. Kay Ivey for her approval.  1819 News
  • Alabama lawmakers passed a bill yesterday making Juneteenth an official state holiday after a 13-5 Senate vote, and the measure now goes to Governor Kay Ivey for her decision. If signed, state offices will close on June 19 as they do on other state holidays.  Alabama Public Radio
