BUSINESS NEWS

  • Master Boat Builders in Mobile began fabricating two hull modules for a Navajo-class T-ATS vessel in cooperation with Austal USA; once finished, the modules will move to Austal’s facility for final erection + outfitting and showcase distributed modular shipbuilding that lets smaller yards handle complex Navy work.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The City of Mobile released an animation showing Regions Arena as a 2027 hub for concerts, sports events + Mardi Gras traditions.  UTV 44

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The AWF Delta & Bay Conservation Center at 5 Rivers reopened after a year of upgrades on the 70-acre property along Battleship Parkway. Officials and local leaders attended the ribbon-cutting, and school field trips are set to start soon.  Gulf Coast Media
  • On April 30, environmental journalist Ben Raines gave a keynote on coastal biodiversity and pollution at the Gulf Coast Center for Ecotourism + Sustainability in Gulf Shores, as Gulf Coast Media hosted Shared Shores to bring community members and high school ambassadors together for conservation discussions.  Gulf Coast Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Terri Sewell from Selma condemned AG Steve Marshall’s claim that Black voters are better off with the GOP by saying they can vote for themselves. She made her remarks in Montgomery as part of the ongoing debate over new congressional maps + voting rights.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local veteran Onrie Brown is pushing to expand Mobile VA Clinic services by urging legislators to add a pharmacy, urgent care, and dental care (as well as a dedicated veteran’s advocate) so that veterans can avoid long drives for essential services.  UTV 44
  • Mobile County health officials say there is little risk of hantavirus from a cruise ship that raised media concerns; federal agencies monitor ship health protocols because the virus mainly comes from rodent exposure & residents are urged to maintain proper hygiene.  UTV 44

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Local gardeners on the Gulf Coast can cultivate lavender by selecting hardy varieties such as lavandin and Spanish lavender + using well-drained soil and proper watering. The guide notes that if you can grow rosemary, you can also succeed with lavender.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Fresco, a new Italian restaurant in Bon Secour, has opened in the former Tin Top location & now offers authentic Italian cuisine with house-made pasta and seafood dishes; it is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday.  AL.com

  • Little Point Clear purchased the long-vacant Baron's Inn on 701 S. Mobile St. in Fairhope and is renovating it into the Little Point Scenic Inn. The project includes 24 guest rooms, landscaping, and indoor and outdoor event spaces and will open in early 2027.  Gulf Coast Media

SPORTS NEWS

  • Four Baldwin County teams (Elberta, Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and Fairhope) won area softball titles earlier this week and earned spots in next week's South Regionals in Gulf Shores; winners and runners-up from May 11-14 will move on to the state tournament in Oxford from May 18-22.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Event organizers are hosting a Media Day on Thursday, June 4 at 12:00 p.m. at Ladd-Peebles Stadium to preview the Port City Classic SIAC matchup between Tuskegee University & Fort Valley State University, where credentialed media will get interviews and photo opportunities before game day.  UTV 44
