ECONOMY NEWS

  • SSAB is expanding its Mobile plant in Axis with a $74 million investment that will add 12 jobs and boost production of premium steel products. The project is supported by over $4.3 million in tax incentives (including a ten-year property tax abatement) and is scheduled to be completed by the first quarter of 2027 (the new building will feature a state-of-the-art tempering furnace).  AL.com

  • Mobile County employees have trained on high-tech driving simulators since January to boost their driving skills — the tools, purchased in 2024, offer more than 100 realistic scenarios to build muscle memory.   • The 2025 municipal elections are in full swing as candidates from cities like Mobile prepare for the Aug. 26 vote. In Mobile, Sprio Cheriogotis (over $614,605 raised) and Connie Hudson (over $459,501 raised) lead the race after Mayor Sandy Stimpson said she will not run, and any candidate raising or spending over ($1,000) must file a report by law.  1819 News

  • State Rep. Debbie Wood’s election audit bill HB30 cleared the House with a 63-30 vote and a Senate committee earlier but did not receive a Senate vote before the session adjourned today.
