BUSINESS NEWS

  • Carnival Cruise Line clarified that passengers boarding closed-loop cruises do not need REAL ID — instead, they can use a birth certificate with a state-issued ID or a passport. The Alabama deadline for REAL ID is May 7 — travelers flying or going abroad should carry an acceptable document to avoid delays.  AL.com
  • SSAB, a leading steel producer, has announced a $74 million investment to expand its Mobile County plant. The expansion will boost production and create jobs—details on the timeline are still pending.  Lagniappe Daily

CRIME NEWS

  • Mobile PD is asking for help to locate Jonathan Daniel Braswell, 50, who was last seen on April 29th in the Greenlawn Drive area of Mobile—he is considered endangered and anyone with information should call police.  UTV 44
  • A former Mobile police officer, Jonathan Leach, had his rape charge dismissed by the Mobile County District Attorney after new evidence emerged (he was indicted in Sept. 2024 for allegedly assaulting an incapacitated individual and was fired in June 2024), according to a spokesperson.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Prichard Water Receiver John S. Young will answer questions from residents and businesses in Prichard and Chickasaw on May 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Word of Life Community Church, 351 S. Craft Highway in Chickasaw — the meeting will focus on water bills, repair projects funded by ADEM, consent orders, and efforts to secure additional grant funds.  UTV 44
  • The South Alabama Veterans Council will honor military service on Saturday, May 17 at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park starting at 8:30 a.m. with an Expo (2703 Battleship Memorial Parkway) that features vendor displays and continues at 9:30 a.m. with a ceremony by U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, a Gold Star Ceremony, a parachute display and a cook-off with food trucks.  WKRG News 5
  • Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said on Thursday that left-wing groups dropped a lawsuit against the law banning experimental sex-change procedures for minors (VCCPA) after evidence showed key medical groups did not have good proof for their claims. He said the decision was a big win for the state and will help keep kids from having permanent changes too soon.  1819 News
