EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kids explore the outdoors at AWF’s new Delta and Bay Conservation Center in Spanish Fort starting June 1 when six summer camps for ages 6 to 16 begin. The camps offer hands-on lessons on fishing + birding and survival skills.  The Mobile Rundown
  • Alabama school districts now allow public-to-public transfers under the CHOOSE Act, letting education savings accounts cover tuition next year (10 districts qualify, including Troy City and Geneva County). Award letters are being sent by the Alabama Department of Revenue as funds must be used for the academic year.  1819 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Alabama marine officials announced that red snapper season will open on Friday, May 22 for private recreational anglers and state-licensed charter vessels with seven-day access until the 2026 quota (664,552 pounds) is met. HEALTH NEWS

  • Alabama may soon allow legal sale of medical marijuana nearly five years after legalization as a Montgomery dispensary opens this month while approved locations in Mobile and Daphne remain on hold pending further updates. The commission expects all nine dispensaries to be open by July.  NBC 15

  • A new recipe for Jambalaya With Sausage and Shrimp from Lines&Angles gives home cooks a hearty Cajun option for dinner and was shared online on May 1. The feature walks cooks through browning sausage to finishing the dish perfectly.  Gulf Coast Media

  • On Friday, May 1, high school soccer quarterfinal matches were held in Mobile where Auburn’s girls team won 3-0 over McGill-Toolen and will face Dothan on May 6 in state semifinals; St. Michael’s boys and girls teams advanced with key wins.  AL.com
  • Tereza Mojs of Gulf Shores claimed the Class 6A singles title this spring, propelling her team into the top 10. Meanwhile, Orange Beach Makos posted an 8 to 0 run with perfect softball games & began their Class 4A Area 1 tournament on May 1.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Rain disrupted high school baseball playoffs Friday — some Mobile area games were suspended, while scores from unaffected contests were recorded and additional matchups are scheduled to resume Saturday.  AL.com
