CRIME NEWS

  • William Terry Holmes of Brewton was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $26,185.70 in restitution after he sent a threatening letter to the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office in March 2024—he warned the DA, his family and a judge of a very painful death after the office pursued the death penalty following his alleged associate’s capital murder conviction, while security measures were already in place.  1819 News
  • Mobile police arrested Terrvia Frison, 43, for first-degree domestic violence after a shooting on Tuesday night near Emogene Street and Florida Street, +where officers found a man with a gunshot wound taken to a hospital after an argument between him and his girlfriend+.  WKRG News 5

CULTURE NEWS

  • Engineers declared that the west end of the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in downtown Mobile is unsafe due to long-standing termite damage, so the Archdiocese closed this section while moving sacristy items as a precaution—no repair timetable has been set.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mobile native and trailblazing Labor Secretary Alexis Herman died last week at 77, and she was known for her strong work for workplace equality. She began as the youngest head of the Women’s Bureau at 29 & later helped negotiate a major postal strike and shape policies that improved the minimum wage and lowered unemployment.  Alabama Public Radio
  • State Rep. Jennifer Fidler sponsored a bill that passed the House 83—2 with some abstentions and now requires money transmitters to record transactions over $1,000 and report large, suspicious cash dealings; the measure, which removes a planned fee and adds penalties for violators, now heads to the Senate for approval.  1819 News
  • Mobile County installed two driving simulators in January to help train sheriff’s office and public works employees. The sheriff’s office training is nearly done while public works safety training is now underway.  UTV 44
  • Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall filed a lawsuit Tuesday in Montgomery County Circuit Court against TikTok Inc. and its parent ByteDance Inc. — alleging the platform targeted youth with addictive and harmful content while misleading parents about safety features, and the suit seeks penalties under Alabama’s Deceptive Trade Practices Act — a measure meant to add pressure amid growing concerns over social media safety.  Gulf Coast Media

  • The Reese’s Senior Bowl produced 106 of 257 players drafted in the 2025 NFL Draft, meaning 41% of all picks came from the event and marking the fifth straight year with triple-digit selections, with every NFL team choosing at least one player (the Jacksonville Jaguars led with eight).  Gulf Coast Media
