- ➤ The Archdiocese of Mobile closed the Cathedral-Basilica’s west end today after engineers found extensive termite damage—worship items were moved and visitors are directed to enter the church from the east side while no reopening date is set. WKRG News 5
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A two-vehicle crash occurred Wednesday on Alabama State Route 193 when 40-year-old Jeffrey S. Shaw of Coden was fatally injured at about 5:15 p.m. — his 2000 Toyota Celina collided head-on with a 2005 Chevrolet Suburban driven by 36-year-old Justin Hera — and Hera was transported to Springhill Medical Center while ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division investigated the crash. - ➤ On April 24th at 4:25 p.m., Mobile Police observed a reported stolen vehicle near Highway 90 and Three Notch Road (where officers initiated a traffic stop) when the driver struck a cruiser while fleeing on I-10 and later arrested 30-year-old Renada Washington (who was taken to Metro Jail). EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Alabama Education Association praised Gov. Kay Ivey for signing a law that gives public education employees immediate compensation for work-related injuries. The law creates a new program for teachers, community college employees and bus drivers and has an estimated startup cost of $15.6 million. 1819 News
- ➤ W. Kamau Bell won Celebrity Jeopardy and donated part of his $1 million prize to teachers in Mobile and Oakland public schools—funding 72 projects from 52 teachers at 22 schools. He said more plans for the donation would be announced soon. AL.com

- ➤ The City of Mobile and Growing Real Alternatives Everywhere will host a free traffic warrant clinic on June 13 at the Springhill Recreation Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to help residents clear outstanding traffic warrants — the event will also offer childcare, food and family entertainment for those attending.
