CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Mobile police officials said that on April 24 a woman in a stolen car hit a cruiser while trying to escape during a chase on I-10; her car got stuck in mud near the state line and she was taken into custody without incident. WKRG News 5
- ➤ FBI Mobile announced Thursday that 66-year-old Dale Davis faces federal charges for attempted carjacking and discharging a deadly weapon after he allegedly shot a 74-year-old woman in a midtown Publix parking lot on Florida St—she was loading groceries when he demanded money and ordered her to drive him to an ATM before she was shot, and he now faces state robbery and assault charges while being held in Mobile Metro Jail. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The City of Mobile (announced at a recent Breakfast with the Mayor event) is seeking a Margaritaville Bar atop the National Maritime Museum to add a new Buffett-themed attraction along the waterfront. The museum will also host a Buffett exhibit spanning two floors and a larger-than-life sculpture (set to debut at the Son of a Sailor Festival in September). 1819 News

- ➤ Agreements have been reached for a new Amtrak Mardi Gras Service that will run twice a day between New Orleans and Mobile starting this summer (schedules and fares will be announced soon). The service will offer connections to Bay Saint Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi and Pascagoula and is expected to boost tourism and local jobs. UTV 44
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources received 13 lots—donated by the Alabama Coastal Heritage Trust—to protect sand dunes and maritime forests on the Fort Morgan Peninsula. ADCNR has consolidated nearly 100 acres of undeveloped land and will manage the area for beach mouse habitat and bird migration. Gulf Coast Media
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen and former secretary John Merrill traded harsh words over voter lists and personal scandals, with Allen pointing to Merrill's affair—raising new issues before the lieutenant governor race. Merrill, who apologized for his past, said he does not agree with Allen's claims and is weighing a return to politics. AL.com
- ➤ State Sen. Arthur Orr and State Rep. Neil Rafferty sponsored a new bill that gives gig workers, including Uber and Lyft drivers, portable benefits accounts. Gov. Ivey signed the law so that starting next year businesses can voluntarily add money to these accounts—helping over 79,000 independent workers get benefits like health care, childcare, and retirement savings. 1819 News
