CRIME NEWS

  • Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson said his staff and law enforcement are investigating recent violent incidents including a fatal shooting at Sage Park last Thursday and a robbery and shooting at Publix on Easter weekend — new laws with increased penalties will guide local, state, and federal agencies as they join forces to stop the senseless violence in Mobile.  1819 News
  • Mobile Sheriff's deputies investigated a deadly shooting in Wilmer and charged Jason Paul Covington—accused of Murder, discharging a gun into a building and of violating firearm restrictions—with the crime that unfolded on April 22nd.  NBC 15

CULTURE NEWS

  • At a town hall meeting on November 12, Read Freely Alabama urged that the award-winning novel Sold remain in the teen section despite state guidelines on sexually explicit material. Federal rulings in Arkansas and Iowa blocked similar restrictions—raising the possibility of legal precedent for how Alabama will interpret the First Amendment.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Judge Ben Fuller denied a motion to dismiss former Mobile Police Chief Paul Prine’s lawsuit against city council members including Kenyen Brown on Monday afternoon—allowing the case to move forward. Prine filed his suit on Christmas Eve 2024, claiming officials tried to damage his reputation with a report he calls a hit piece.  UTV 44
  • Officials from ALDOT, the Alabama Emergency Management Agency and local agencies are practicing a lane reversal drill today on I-65 from Mobile to Montgomery — the drill will test plans to use all lanes for northbound traffic during evacuations — and drivers may see agency vehicles though no delays are expected.  AL.com
  • A review of federal data found that 120 historic buildings in Alabama cost taxpayers $14.2 million in maintenance and operating expenses in 2023 and have $820.3 million in deferred repairs with an estimated $26.5 million in future capital needs—federal officials are now moving to list more properties for accelerated disposition as part of cost-saving efforts. A Mobile federal building remains among those affected by the plan to trim excess real property holdings.  AL.com
  • Councilman Josh Woods said Mobile’s current ordinance on garbage pickup times is unreasonable and proposed allowing bins to be placed from 5:00 a.m. the day before collection day until 6:00 a.m. the following day. He also recommended reducing the first offense fine from $250 to $50 + removing jail time for repeat violations, and the proposal could be voted on next Tuesday.  UTV 44
  • Mobile police announced that the department will host a National Prescription Drug Take Back Day event on Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at MPD Headquarters on Government Street—residents can dispose of unused and expired drugs safely or schedule an early drop-off by contacting MPD.  WKRG News 5
  • A judge denied motions filed by Mobile City Council members, attorneys, and consulting firms from a lawsuit by former police chief Paul Prine who alleged that city officials set off a witch hunt to oust him. Circuit Judge Ben Fuller made the decision on Monday — his ruling allows the lawsuit to move forward as officials continue to dispute his claims.  1819 News
