CRIME NEWS

  • Mobile law enforcement, including District Attorney Keith Blackwood and Sheriff Paul Burch, said after Friday night's shooting at Sage Park—where 28-year-old Frenicka Craig died and another man was hospitalized—that they will work with federal agencies and deploy a 42-man special operations unit to bring the shooters to justice.  NBC 15
  • A 74-year-old woman hospitalized after being shot during an attempted robbery at a midtown Publix continues to improve, law enforcement said—her condition remains stable as she recovers.  Lagniappe Daily
  • After shootings in Mobile that include Saturday's Publix incident injuring a 74-year-old woman, city leaders held a Monday press conference at Sage Park, a current homicide investigation site, and announced plans to increase patrols, add security cameras + expand sheriff’s support while the suspect remains in Metro Jail.  WKRG News 5

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alabama-based EWTN switched its programming to live coverage as it mourned Pope Francis’s death on April 21—an event that came after the pope celebrated Easter at St. Peter’s Square. CEO Mike Warsaw recalled meeting the pope and his kindness and good humor, and the network will air Masses, rosaries and devotions from the Vatican to honor his legacy.  AL.com
  • Archbishop Thomas Rodi of Mobile said he is deeply saddened by Pope Francis' death on April 21 at 88, praising his lifelong work for peace and care for the weak (noting his effort to visit inmates on Holy Thursday despite medical advice).   • Wes Bedsole completed the aviation program at Coastal Alabama Community College and began working at Airbus in Mobile—he built skills in sheet metal work through hands-on training. His apprenticeship led him to a full-time role at the company.  The Mobile Rundown
  • Madeline Borchert, a 17-year-old junior at the Alabama School of Math and Science, won the top state honor at the Alabama Science and Engineering Fair after her first-place win at the Mobile Regional Science Fair — her project on RNA interference pesticides precisely targeted invasive species. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Austal USA in Mobile began building the USNS Solomon Atkinson (T-ATS 12) – the Navy’s seventh towing, salvage and rescue ship – and held the keel-laying ceremony last week with Atkinson’s widow and daughters welding their initials into a keel plate. This ship is named after the commercial fisherman who became one of the first Navy SEALs, honoring his long service.  1819 News

  • The NFL Draft begins on Thursday at 7 p.m. CDT in Green Bay where first-round prospects from Alabama such as guard Tyler Booker, linebacker Jihaad Campbell + Ole Miss cornerback Trey Amos are expected to be considered even though fewer local players may be chosen this year compared to previous seasons.
