- ➤ A Baldwin County community is rallying around a toddler with Osteogenesis Imperfecta by hosting the Hope Blooms for Eleanor benefit on May 3 at Bella Sera Gardens in Loxley at 2 p.m. The event will feature live music, food + activities to raise funds for specialized medical care. - ➤ Mobile County's own Alexia Jayy advanced to NBC's The Voice finale after performing Aretha Franklin's hit (I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You) Monday night and will compete for the title tonight at NBC 15. NBC 15
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Magic City Acceptance Academy seeks approval from the Charter School Commission at its May 4 meeting for an expansion plan that received Homewood’s zoning approval last year; the plan will add a band room, theater, and counseling space to boost enrollment to 550-600 students. 1819 News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ State Forester Rick Oates issued a statewide Fire Alert due to worsening drought and low humidity, after 387 wildfires burned 15,850 acres including a 500-acre blaze in Mobile County. Outdoor burns are restricted until Mon, Apr. 20 (call 800-392-5679 for wildfires). UTV 44
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Baldwin County Emergency Management now uses a new phone alert system to quickly warn beachgoers along the Gulf Coast when a shark attack is verified by beach patrol or law enforcement (as part of Lulu's Law). The alert covers areas from Fort Morgan to the Florida state line. UTV 44
- ➤ On Wednesday, April 22 the Dauphin Island Public Safety Department and town will host Coastal Storm Preparedness Day at the Dauphin Island Community Center from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The event will offer hurricane readiness education, live demonstrations, evacuation planning and a Q&A with emergency officials. - ➤ Spring break is underway for students from Baldwin and Mobile who are heading to the Gulf Coast, and Gulf Shores crews are working to keep swimmers safe by urging them to check water conditions (rip currents and warning flags) and keep close to lifeguards and children. NBC 15
- ➤ Urology Associates in Mobile now offers Vabrinty—a breakthrough injectable treatment for prostate cancer patients that lowers male hormones fueling tumor growth.
