GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Prichard residents gathered at a town hall after 1.3 million gallons of sewage spilled into a waterway as court-appointed receiver John Young said—after filing a report with Mobile County Circuit Court—that the failing water and sewer system poses a public health risk and should merge with MAWSS to address costly repairs and high rates; local leaders, including Mayor Jimmie Gardner, criticized his narrow plan while a motion to review his proposal was filed amid corruption indictments.   AL.com
  • State lawmakers approved HB387 — a bill that lets local governments cut grocery sales taxes without needing extra revenue — but local officials warn that many cities may not follow since they rely on that money for basic services. Experts say without full constitutional tax reforms, any cuts would be a temporary fix for rising grocery costs.  AL.com
  • The Alabama House passed a bill banning wireless devices in public schools for the 2025-2026 school year—students can keep devices only if they are turned off and stored—and local boards must set policies by July 1.
