- ➤ Kenneth Colburn—who pleaded guilty to shooting and murdering Tammy Wedgeworth after she offered him a ride home on New Year's Day, 2022—will serve life without parole. 1819 News

- ➤ The City of Foley honored bestselling author Colleen Coble when the Foley Public Library hosted a series of events including a book launch for her new novel Ambush—she was awarded the key to the city by Mayor Ralph Hellmich at the Foley Civic Center on March 22. She also led a discussion, held a book signing with co-author Rick Acker and took part in a workshop and storytime—giving local readers a close look at her work. Gulf Coast Media

- ➤ Mobile’s Prichard Water Works & Sewer Board said heavy rains caused sewer overflows on Monday and Tuesday that released more than one million gallons of sewage from manholes on Patricia Avenue and Whistler Street—health officer Dr. Kevin Michaels advised residents to avoid standing water and to wash hands and clothing if exposed. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Federal funding for the Mobile County Health Department was abruptly cut last week, hitting its $70 million budget with a $10 million loss and ending key COVID and health equity programs. Health Officer Dr. Kevin Michaels said the cuts, which ended grants planned through March 24th and announced on March 25th, could reduce outreach and staff — a change that forces the department to adjust its plans. - ➤ The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is auctioning a 10-year lease with a purchase option of $8.5 million for the 70-acre 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center in a 250,000-acre park where five rivers flow into Mobile Bay. The auction will begin at $500,000 on April 17 at 10 a.m. at the 5 Rivers Tensaw Theater — the lease includes conditions to maintain outdoor education and recreation. 1819 News
- ➤ Mobile County public notices state that several abandoned vehicle auctions will be held at different sites in Mobile — including the Mobile Police Department Impound Yard on June 10 at 9:00 a.m. Interested parties must register online and bid in cash on vehicles that have not been redeemed. - ➤ A WalletHub study shows three of the most obese cities in the U.S. are in Alabama—Mobile ranked fourth nationally and came in second for high medical consequences—linking weight issues to higher rates of diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. AL.com

- ➤ South Haven Apartments in Mobile failed a city inspection last week after residents complained about faulty outlets, poor air conditioner wiring and rusty bathtubs — Millennia, the Cleveland-based owner, said they are working with the proper parties and denied that tenants are asked to pay for repairs while some contractors claim they have not been paid.
