COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Ono Men's Club, composed of about 100 Ono Island residents, donated $2,000 to the Christian Service Center in Gulf Shores—continuing a decade-long tradition of supporting local charities. The center is a volunteer-run agency that provides emergency help to families in crisis.  Gulf Coast Media
  • On Friday, inspectors visited South Haven Apartments off Dauphin Island Parkway and found issues including an exterior door cut too short—leaving a wide gap that confirmed residents’ complaints about poor living conditions. The city confirmed the visit and said Millennia Properties, the complex owner, would follow up on the concerns.  UTV 44

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Austal USA in Mobile christened its first steel ship for the U.S. Navy—the Future USNS Billy Frank Jr.—on Saturday with ship sponsor Peggen Frank leading the ceremony. The ship is named for a Native American leader who fought for fishing rights and is the first of four steel vessels the shipyard will build alongside its aluminum boats.  WKRG News 5

CRIME NEWS

  • On Jan. 30, Mobile police arrested Joseph Jones — 36 — after he allegedly stole a Kubota track loader and led officers on an interstate chase captured on video, during which the loader struck a police car and he reportedly tried to hit an officer; he was shot and later taken to a hospital.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lucy Buffett will play Vi in the musical Grease to honor her mother's love for theater. Eastern Shore Repertory Theatre will stage the show from April 30 through May 3 at Henry George Park in Fairhope — and she will join rehearsals in the last two weeks of April.  AL.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Alabama Department of Conservation stated that Big Creek Lake is open to the public — though MAWSS, which owns the lake and supplies Mobile's water, has kept it closed. Lawmakers will review the opinion at a public hearing on Tuesday in Montgomery as they consider a bill aimed at protecting recreational access.  UTV 44

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Senator Bobby Singleton (D-Greensboro) said he fully supports gaming in the state and is in talks with a potential casino sponsor that would include African American ownership to benefit his community; he warned new dollars are needed after DOGE took $290 million from public health and mental health programs. Lawmakers are now working behind the scenes on a gambling package.  1819 News

  • Vic Moten, a senior for the Daphne Trojans, reached her 1,000th career strikeout on March 27 when she struck out the first batter on four pitches in a 17-0 win over Foley - she now will join the Alabama Crimson Tide.  Gulf Coast Media
