COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Seventeen German shepherds were surrendered to Mobile Animal Shelter when a local man found caring for them too hard—12 dogs were adopted today and over 350 adoption applications were received for the rest. CRIME NEWS

  • The Spanish Fort Police Department responded at 12:15 a.m. Saturday to a home invasion in Spanish Fort Estates where a 17-year-old male was shot after forcibly entering a home, and officers provided emergency aid until he was airlifted to the hospital, where he underwent surgery and remains stable but in serious condition while charges are pending against him.  1819 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Legendary quilts from Gee’s Bend are touring Alabama on a three-city awareness tour; Birmingham will host a stop on March 29 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Civil Rights Institute + Mobile will host the tour on April 26 at the Historical Avenue Cultural Center ahead of the main festival in Gee’s Bend on October 4, which will feature live demonstrations and artist talks.  The Mobile Rundown

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Baldwin County’s Solid Waste Disposal Authority opened its new $25 million, 62,000-square-foot recycling facility and natural gas plant on March 20 in Summerdale. The facility will process up to 40,000 tons of recyclables each year and create 50 jobs—helping expand recycling services for counties including Mobile.  Gulf Coast Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Alabama Education Association pushed Senate Bill 1 to give school workers coverage if they are hurt on the job—covering teachers, bus drivers and community college employees—but the House Ways and Means Education Committee delayed the vote until after spring break when lawmakers return on April 1. Some lawmakers say the new program, which has a startup cost estimated at $15.6 million— a cost that they must consider—will offer state employees the benefits they need.  1819 News
  • Mobile County Commissioners will commit $7.5 million to the nearly $300 million civic center project — a decision made after months of talks with city officials.  Lagniappe Daily
  • The Alabama Public Library Service Board of Trustees voted Thursday to withhold state funding from the Fairhope Public Library after conservative parents complained about books in the teen section, and the board dismissed its executive director. A local group has started fundraising to replace the $42,000 in state funds—while community members express shock at the decision.  Alabama Public Radio
