BUSINESS NEWS

  • Renasant Bank and The First received regulatory approval for their $26 billion merger and will complete the deal on April 1, forming a company with about $26 billion in assets and over 250 locations throughout the Southeast—Renasant branches operate statewide while The First serves areas near the Gulf Coast.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Macy Gray is set to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her breakout album On How Life Is with summer concerts—she will perform in Huntsville on August 7 and at Mobile Saenger Theatre on August 8. Ticket sales for both shows begin at 10 a.m. March 21.  AL.com
  • Mobile's only Morrison's cafeteria in the country opened in 1920 and now serves many locals each day starting at 10:45 a.m.—it offers classic dishes like chopped beef and roast beef. Manager Danny Grubbs said the restaurant is busy on Sundays—and he plans new updates for the store in the future.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Paul’s Episcopal School will host its annual Saints Run on Sunday, March 30 beginning at 1:00 p.m., with a USATF certified 5k and a 1-mile fun run/walk that starts and finishes in Saints Square on campus—pre-registration ends Tuesday, March 25 and day-of packet pickup begins at 1:00 p.m. All proceeds support the Chad Saucier Memorial Scholarship Fund.  NBC 15

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fairhope has halted new applications for certain residential developments for at least nine months to give the city time to upgrade its water, sewer, electricity and gas systems. The pause may be extended beyond November and does not affect projects that have already been approved.  UTV 44
  • The USDA has launched the Emergency Commodity Assistance Program—providing up to $10 billion in direct payments—to help Alabama farmers offset rising input costs and falling commodity prices, and the signup period opens today for 2024 crop reports. Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate said the program offers critical support while noting it will not make up for all recent losses.  Gulf Coast Media
  • State Rep. Arnold Mooney refiled HB4, a bill to repeal the law that gives public and school libraries immunity from criminal obscenity laws, which aims to protect children from exposure to explicit material. The measure has 49 co-sponsors such as House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter and remains in the House Judiciary Committee without a public hearing—Clean Up Alabama criticizes lawmakers for offering only lip service.  1819 News

  • Doctors in coastal Alabama launched a teaching kitchen at USA Health to show patients, community members and high school students how to cook healthy meals with fresh ingredients.
