CRIME NEWS

  • FBI Mobile and HSI Mobile have arrested 137 people since February 4, 2025 in an immigration crackdown aimed at keeping communities safe—teams report that each day at least one person with a violent criminal past is detained.  UTV 44
  • Mobile police responded to a call at Langan Park on Tuesday afternoon when shots were fired during a shootout—officers found three vehicles marked by gunfire, and no one was hurt as the investigation continues.  AL.com
  • Mobile County Sheriff’s Office arrested Lighthouse Academy daycare worker Kia Baldwin for child abuse on March 13—after surveillance footage showed her violently throwing an infant under eight months old during an incident on February 18 that left bruises reported by the family.  UTV 44

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Stephen King adaptation titled The Life of Chuck, filmed in Mobile and directed by Mike Flanagan, is set to hit theaters in June after winning a People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (a win that helped secure its distribution deal). Local film officials said the production worked with local police and businesses to ensure a smooth filming experience.  AL.com
  • The city seeks proposals from artists to sculpt a larger-than-life bronze statue of singer Jimmy Buffett for display on the Mobile waterfront—The statue will debut with a museum exhibition in fall 2026 during the Son of a Sailor Festival.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fairhope High School journalism students and teacher Angela Hobart won 17 awards at the Feb. 21 Alabama Scholastic Press Association event at the University of Alabama. Hobart said the competition taught students teamwork and the importance of ethical reporting—real lessons that extend beyond the classroom.  Gulf Coast Media
