  • Meat With a Mission will host a BBQ Rib Fundraiser to benefit the Baldwin County Boys Ranch on Saturday, April 25 at 21870 County Road 32, Summerdale. Each $40 order includes a rack of smoked ribs & a pint of homemade beans, with proceeds supporting the local ranch.  Gulf Coast Media

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Austal USA launched the Navy’s final Expeditionary Fast Transport, the USNS Lansing (EPF 16) on Feb. 25 and now readies it for sea trials at the Mobile shipyard as final outfitting wraps up; the company will soon shift to constructing three Expeditionary Medical Ships under a $867.6M Navy contract.  NBC 15
  • Amtrak Mardi Gras Service on the Gulf Coast exceeded ridership forecasts with nearly 70,500 passengers by Jan. 31; the train offers twice daily trips from Mobile to New Orleans, stopping in Pascagoula, Biloxi, Gulfport, and Bay Saint Louis (fares average $34 per person).  Gulf Coast Media

CULTURE NEWS

  • Frog Pond Sunday Social kicked off its 16th season on Feb. 22 in Silverhill when local songwriters performed three sets at Blue Moon Farm (an intimate outdoor stage beneath a 200-year-old cedar tree). The invite-only event, hosted by owner Cathe Steele, continues a strong local music tradition.  Gulf Coast Media
  • The Mobile Arts Council is celebrating spring with two nature-inspired exhibits at the MAC Gallery (Room 1927, 6 S. Joachim Street downtown) from March 4 to March 28. A joint opening reception is scheduled on Friday, March 13, from 6 to 9 p.m.  Gulf Coast Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Delta Elementary School raised $3,903.73 for the American Heart Association during its annual fundraiser — nearly doubling last year's total. Top fundraiser kindergartener Jaxen Barlow raised over $400, while students in grades two to six joined a jump rope contest ahead of Mardi Gras break.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Orange Beach Elementary School was recognized as a Top 25 school for 2024-2025 after earning a 99 on the 2025 State Report Card. The honor was given during the Alabama State Board of Education meeting on Feb. 12 in Montgomery.  Gulf Coast Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mobile County has installed a high-capacity pulverizer at its Recycling Center, funded by a $200,000 ADEM grant, so residents can drop off clear, green and amber glass together in one bin. The system processes over 500,000 pounds of glass annually for repurposing in local infrastructure.  NBC 15

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • NASA revised its Artemis plan by adding an extra practice flight before attempting a lunar landing, which could lead to more launches of the Alabama-built SLS rocket from Huntsville. The agency aims to shorten the time between crewed missions as moon landings are planned for 2028.  Alabama Public Radio

  • The Alabama High School Athletic Association is weighing a rotation of championship sites that could cut travel for schools and spread economic benefits across venues including Mobile + Birmingham by following the football model, which gradually shifted hosting duties.   Gulf Coast Media
