  • City officials in Saraland announced that The Land Sports and Recreation Complex is complete after opening its final three baseball diamonds — now having eight baseball fields on a 100-acre, $72 million project that will host youth sports, tournaments, and community events.  NBC 15
  • Jimmy Rush, 99, and his son Jimmy Jr, 80, celebrated a birthday giveaway at Wintzell’s Oyster House (downtown) on Monday by enjoying the free oysters promised to any man 80 accompanied by his father in a longstanding local tradition.  UTV 44
  • The City of Saraland completed the final phase of The Land Sports and Recreation Complex with the opening of three baseball diamonds that finish an eight-field facility and add indoor and outdoor sports courts — tournaments and regional events are already scheduled at 7365 Celeste Road.  UTV 44

  • Blues Traveler will perform at Mobile Saenger on Thursday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets go on sale Friday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. (online or at the theatre box office at 6 South Joachim Street).  UTV 44

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawmakers passed a bill to offer teaching certificates to veterans with four years active duty and 60 credits with a 2.5 GPA (to ease teacher shortages) if they clear a background check and receive a local recommendation; the five-year certificate pairs them with a mentor and awaits Gov.   • Researchers at the Comparative Cognition and Communication Lab at USA are studying queerness in animal behavior and sharing findings on Instagram (highlighting same-sex interactions, non-monogamous mating, and intersex traits) to foster scientific discussion. Led by Dr. Heidi Lyn, the lab provides queer animal resources to destigmatize biological diversity.  1819 News

  • The Department of Environmental Management ordered a consent order against Amrize for repeated air quality violations at its cement plant in Theodore plus imposed a $250k fine. The agreement, issued Feb. 11, is open for public comment until March 13.  AL.com
  • Ben Raines led a presentation on Feb. 20 at the Gulf State Park Learning Campus in Gulf Shores that showcased blooming iris fields, carnivorous plants, migratory birds, and native fish, and stressed the urgent need to protect Alabama's natural diversity (linked to the Mobile-Tensaw Delta).  Gulf Coast Media

  • Dauphin Island officials announced that $5M in federal funding has been secured to restore and protect the west end from erosion and storm damage, with dredged material used for beach nourishment + coordinated engineering and permitting efforts that town leaders and Senator Katie Britt say will boost coastal resilience.  NBC 15

  • Supporters from Mobile joined others at the state capitol on Tuesday for HIV Advocacy Day to remind lawmakers that many still need care and support; they traveled by chartered bus from Mobile to Montgomery to challenge barriers and stigma.  NBC 15

  • Tickets are on sale for the inaugural Home & Garden Show, which will run March 19-22 in downtown Mobile at the Arthur R. Outlaw Convention Center.
