- ➤ U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures announced $2.5 million in federal funds will support Africatown’s forever home program by funding new construction and renovations in the historic community; three new homes hit the market today near the Robert Hope Community Center during an open house. AL.com
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Navy has dispatched the USS Farragut (DDG-99) to serve as Mardi Gras ship; it will arrive Friday, Feb. 13 at Pier 2 and offer free public tours from Feb. 14 through Feb. 17 as part of the festivities. AL.com
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Crews will close a section of Mobile Street for an hour daily from Feb. 9 to Feb. 12 to install pole foundations for Alabama Power's service improvements, and traffic will allow one lane with a detour via Spring Hill Avenue — Stanton Road to University Hospital Drive. City of Mobile
- ➤ A new Alabama Poll shows that in the Senate race, Attorney General Steve Marshall leads at 26% while Rep Barry Moore has 17%, and in the lieutenant governor contest, Secretary of State Wes Allen leads at 23% (500 surveyed Feb. 1-3). Both contests remain open heading into the May 19 primary. AL.com
- ➤ Local lawmakers introduced a bill to let tourists taste oysters on-site at local farms. The bill, cosponsored by Rep. Margie Wilcox, Rep. Chip Brown, and Rep. Matt Simpson, passed the House last week—boosting our $6M oyster industry— and now awaits Senate committee review. UTV 44

- ➤ The Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Central Board voted Friday to expand the Class 6A playoffs to 24 teams—and set Mobile’s Super 7 to a five-day schedule at Hancock Whitney Stadium this December.
