  • On Friday, Feb. 13, the USS Farragut will begin transiting the Mobile Ship Channel and arrive at 10 a.m. at Pier 2 — city officials and Navy representatives will host an arrival ceremony at 11 a.m., with public tours offered daily from Feb. 14 to Feb. 17.  City of Mobile
  • The 6th annual Be My Valentine fundraiser for Mary’s Shelter Gulf Coast will be held Sunday, Feb. 15 from noon to 4 p.m. at Post 99 American Legion on South McKenzie St (tickets are available online or by phone) and will feature a $10,000 door prize, auctions, lunch, and music.  Gulf Coast Media

  • Five Below, a trendy discount retailer, is opening its new Alabama store today at 10200 Eastern Shore Blvd in Spanish Fort & is part of a rollout of 42 stores set for February and March.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • After nearly a year docked at Mobile’s port, the SS United States will depart for Florida’s Destin-Fort Walton Beach in April to be sunk as the world’s largest artificial reef and become a tourist attraction, with plans for a land-based museum (Nick Tomecek).  AL.com
  • Polka Dots lit up downtown Mobile on Thursday night’s Mardi Gras parade – a festive event where over 25,000 revelers enjoyed beads and cocktails. The all-women group is active year-round through service supporting child advocacy, the Boys and Girls Club, and veterans’ home.  NBC 15

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bayside Academy held its chess tournament on Jan. 24 with 80 players in three divisions (Open, Scholastic Rated, Unrated) and saw senior Colt Hancock win the Scholastic Rated section; the team now prepares for the State Scholastic Tournament on March 7 in Huntsville.  Gulf Coast Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Silicon Ranch plans to build a 260-megawatt solar farm in Stockton to power a Meta data center south of Montgomery, but local residents oppose the project (citing wetlands and wildlife concerns) (amid fears of losing traditional land use), with construction slated to begin by year-end.  UTV 44

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An NBC 15 investigation revealed that Alabama Power’s Stockton I and II solar projects for a Meta data center in Baldwin County received swift approval from the Public Service Commission, prompting community concerns ahead of a town hall meeting on Feb. 9.
