  • Make-A-Wish Alabama is launching a new specialty license plate campaign today that will direct $41.50 from each sale to grant wishes for children with critical illnesses. Drivers must pre-commit as 1,000 are needed, and the first 500 will receive a commemorative keychain (details available at Make-A-Wish Alabama).  Gulf Coast Media
  • Altar & Rosary Society is hosting its Annual Bake Sale on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 8 a.m. to noon at Our Lady of the Gulf parish campus in the Waterway District. Homemade treats such as lemon pies, cookies, and soups will be sold to support church ministries.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Eight Eastern Shore students were named goodwill ambassadors on the 2026 Dogwood Trail Court following the 66th Annual Dogwood Trail Pageant on Jan. 17. They will each receive a $1,500 scholarship and custom costume and debut at the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival (March 21).  Gulf Coast Media

  • Alabama Power said on Friday it is here for customers in these extreme temperatures and offered tips for saving money on increased energy bills. The agency advises closing unused rooms and using available tools like Rate Advisor + Bill Explainer as winter forecasts report temperatures in the teens.  NBC 15

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mobile’s therapeutic youth marching band will debut its performance at the Bayport Parading Society’s parade at 2 p.m. on Saturday as part of Carnival season, and the program offers support for young musicians in the community.  NBC 15
  • Wilco will perform at Mobile Saenger Theater on Tuesday, April 28 at 8:00 p.m., and tickets go on sale today at 10 a.m.  UTV 44

ECONOMY NEWS

  • At the Grand Hotel in Fairhope on Jan. 23, young professionals heard local leaders outline updates to transportation, utilities, and tourism. Mobile Airport Authority chairman Luckett Robinson said the new terminal at Brookley Aeroplex will open in October while crews work around the clock + additional projects expand local growth.  Gulf Coast Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bayside Academy was named to the 2025 AP School Honor Roll with gold distinction by the College Board, recognizing the school’s strong AP participation & college readiness efforts. More than seventy percent of seniors took at least one AP exam, showing the school’s commitment to challenging coursework.  Gulf Coast Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers tracked Ernst, a 12-foot great white shark, as she swam from Nova Scotia into the Gulf, passing by Gulf Shores; her 90-day journey confirms a thriving marine environment+ she is now heading toward Louisiana.  Gulf Coast Media

  • The Panini Senior Bowl, an all-star game featuring top college football players, is set to begin this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Hancock Whitney Stadium and is expected to boost Mobile's economy + support local restaurants and shops.  UTV 44
