  • Amid dangerously cold temperatures expected for at least seven days, Waterfront Mission in Mobile has activated its Emergency Cold Weather Plan — offering 24/7 shelter with extended check-in and unlimited capacity to protect anyone in need of warmth.  UTV 44

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Ruby Tower, a 980-ft container ship, is aground in Mobile Bay north of Galliard Island, closing the shipping channel until officials secure a safe passage for vessels.  NBC 15

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the University of South Alabama (USA), a sex toy bingo event hosted by Generation Action on Jan. 20 sparked controversy when conservative students were heckled as they questioned the event's approval; university officials have been contacted about concerns over decorum and possible underage attendance.  1819 News
  • State Rep. Matt Woods introduced legislation for a Military Veteran Temporary Teaching Certificate (endorsed by Gov. Ivey) that passed the Alabama Senate last week, allowing eligible veterans to teach specific subjects without a bachelor's degree.  1819 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The city has secured a conservation easement covering nearly 150 acres along Rabbit Creek, including 6,200 feet of creek frontage, to keep the land natural and support wildlife today.   • The Mobile County Commission accepted a $2M State GOMESA grant on Jan. 26 to fund design and construction upgrades at River Delta Marina & Campground. The project will enhance access and safety at the public site (construction to be scheduled after permitting).  NBC 15
