EDUCATION NEWS

  • House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter said the fully funded 2024 CHOOSE Act is expected to make Alabama a leading school choice state by expanding options at public, private, charter, and magnet schools, benefiting over 24,000 students now and aiming to double participation soon (eligibility has been extended).  1819 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A 12-foot great white shark was spotted four miles off Dauphin Island as the Gulf Coast earned a top fishing spot rating for 2026. Dr. Sean Powers said the shark — tracked by OCEARCH from Nova Scotia — may be chasing prey.  NBC 15
  • Alabama farmers and residents are bracing for a dry Winter and Spring as the U.S. Drought Monitor shows extreme drought in parts of Marengo, Greene and Hale Counties and the Gulf coast. Experts warn that low water may hurt crops and supplies, urging conservation & call for federal assistance.  Alabama Public Radio
  • Coastal areas will see a light mix of snow and rain this weekend, with the storm arriving Saturday night and lifting by Sunday afternoon as temperatures warm. Mobile and Baldwin counties have opened warming centers to help residents, with Mobile shelters open until Wednesday and Baldwin's shelter running Saturday morning.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Andy Whitt said a replica of the Saturn 1B rocket will soon be installed at the Alabama Welcome Center on I-65 in Ardmore (pending final approval) to revive the iconic attraction that travelers cherished for over 40 years.  AL.com
  • Foley will dedicate its airport today at 2 p.m. as it is renamed Holk Field at Foley Municipal Airport to honor longtime Mayor Arthur Holk. Family members, city officials, and community guests will attend the ceremony.  1819 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local consumers are advised not to use Live it Up Super Greens powder after reports show 45 people nationwide, including cases in Alabama, suffered salmonella poisoning. The recalled products have expiration dates from Aug. 2026 to Jan. 2028 & federal officials said the investigation is ongoing.  Alabama Public Radio

  • Three former local softball standouts — Vic Moten from Daphne, Daigle Wilson from Orange Beach and Madilyn Byrd from Baldwin County — were named to Softball America's Freshman Top 100, earning national honors as they begin their college careers at Alabama, Auburn and Florida Atlantic.  Gulf Coast Media
  • Diamond Championship Wrestling is hosting pro wrestling tryouts at the Bullet Bob Armstrong Memorial Arena on Saturday, Jan. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—open to athletes 18 to 35 with full and partial scholarships available; applications are due by Wednesday, Jan. 22.  AL.com
