  • Bridge stakeholders are seeking a permit to install a temporary concrete plant (for the I-10 bridge project) near Lewis Landing along Three Mile Creek. Some Africatown residents expressed concerns over potential impacts on the nearly complete waterfront park, and a follow-up public outreach meeting is planned.  NBC 15

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A barge carrying scrap metal caught fire yesterday morning on the Mobile River, according to Alabama State Docks officials, while it was part of a fleet.  NBC 15

CULTURE NEWS

  • Riders and horses attended a free training class at The Grounds this past Saturday to prepare for Mardi Gras parades beginning Jan. 30. City experts taught 25 participants how to read a horse's cues (essential for handling festival surprises).  The Mobile Rundown

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook) criticized the CHOOSE Act on Alabama Public Television this week, saying taxpayer money should not fund private schools without state accountability. He warned that without more funding it will be hard to keep improved reading levels in our schools.  1819 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ocearch tracking data showed a 1,000-pound great white shark named Ernst was pinged near Dauphin Island on Jan. 11. The shark, first tagged in Oct. 2025 in Mahone Bay, has moved unusually close to shore — prompting experts to study its coastal behavior.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers, including Senator Chris Elliott and Representative Rhett Marques, vow to end the practice of placing dredged sediment in thin layers in Mobile Bay because oyster farmers report harmful mud buildup on their cages. They will introduce legislation today at the start of the legislative session.  NBC 15

  • Central Clay County coach Danny Horn, Alabama’s winningest football coach, challenged the current trend of transferring players and lax rule enforcement in Lineville (he believes all transfers should sit out a year to maintain fairness).
